Bruce Arena, who coached the U.S. to the quarterfinals of the 2002 World Cup, was elected Saturday to the U.S. National Soccer Hall of Fame. Arena coached Virginia to five NCAA titles in 18 seasons and D.C. United to a pair of MLS Cup championships and one U.S. Open Cup win before taking over as national team coach in 1998.

Deportivo La Coruna defender Luis Filipe will likely miss the remainder of the Spanish league after suffering multiple leg fractures on Saturday. Filipe came down awkwardly and with the weight of goalkeeper Gorka Iraizoz on top of him after scoring in the 49th minute against Athletic Bilbao. First reports said Filipe fractured his ankle, tibia and fibula from the cringing play.
 

AS Roma beats 10-man Juventus 2-1 (AP)

John Arne Riise's injury-time winner lifted AS Roma over 10-man Juventus 2-1 in the Serie A on Saturday. Alessandro Del Piero gave Juventus the lead in the 51st minute, and Francesco Totti equalized with a penalty in the 68th. Then Juventus goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon was sent off in the 83rd for a professional foul on defender Riise outside the area when he was through on goal.

Hamburg signs van Nistelrooy from Real Madrid (AP)

Dutch striker Ruud van Nistelrooy has joined Hamburg of the German league, ending a 3 1/2 -year stay with Real Madrid. Hamburg said Saturday he signed through the 2010-11 season. Van Nistelrooy has struggled to find playing time with Real Madrid this season. He announced his retirement from international play after the 2008 European Championship.
